The story
Six years into a job that had run its course, a mate needed a valeter at his garage. I said yes for the work. What kept me there was watching people's faces when they saw the car afterwards, that moment when someone looks at their own car and can't quite believe it's the same one. I hadn't expected to care that much. I did.
Somewhere in those six years, doing it for someone else, I learned the difference between a car that looks clean and one that actually is. Most of the trade sells you the first. Once you've seen the second, you can't go back to doing it any other way.
Four and a half years ago, I went out on my own. Ten, ten and a half years in the trade now. Still one car at a time, because that reaction, the one on someone's face when they see it finished, is most of the reason I still do this.
How I work
The standards behind every booking

Actually clean, not just shiny
Silicone dressings make a car look slick without touching what's underneath. I use steam and dedicated products to lift oils and residue out properly, so the finish is real and the smell doesn't come back three days later.

Restraint on the interior
I don't oversaturate it. In summer, you can leave the doors open and drive within half an hour of collection. In winter, it takes longer, drying it out fully so nothing sits damp.

A relational approach, not a drive-through
The other side of it is knowing what someone actually needs the car for before I start. A car going up for sale gets treated differently to a family car doing the school run every day. Getting that right, not just doing the same job on every car regardless, is most of what the standards above are really about.

The difference between me and a cheaper option isn't one big thing. It's the accumulation of small ones.
Where the work happens
The Unit is based on our home farm, fully enclosed and set up for the job. Doors pulled over, weather kept out, good consistent light so I can see exactly what's happening with the paint. That's what correction and coatings actually need, dry, controlled conditions a driveway can't give you.
Every coating job gets a full 24-hour cure before it goes back to you, done in the Unit, out of the weather. I use that window to go back over the car and check it's exactly right before handover.
What it's like working with me
Two jobs stick with me. One was a horsebox coffee cart, towed by a car that had gone rough inside and out, booked in for the signature package by a couple I knew well. I went further than the package on that one. When she saw it finished, she couldn't believe it was the same car.
